THE STUDY'S HOTEL AT UNIVERSITY CITY

Philadelphia 2016 - 2026

ENGLISH

The Study at University City is an elegant 4-star hotel located in the heart of Philadelphia’s University City, strategically positioned between two major academic hubs: the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and Drexel University.

The property is part of the Study Hotels chain, conceived to reflect the intellectual, cultural, and creative spirit of the neighborhoods they inhabit. The design blends modern comfort with academic and artistic elements, such as spacious custom-made desks, museum-style display cases featuring local historical artifacts, and exhibition spaces dedicated to contemporary art. The founder, owner, and creative mind behind the Study Hotels chain is Paul McGowan, already a US collector of the Italian artist Carlo Trevisan. A former senior executive at Starwood Hotels & Resorts (where he helped develop successful brands like W Hotels), McGowan also heads Hospitality 3, the US-based hotel development, design, and management company through which he directly owns and operates the brand's properties.

The idea to found this boutique hotel chain stemmed from a personal insight McGowan had in 2008: while driving with his daughter to visit American college campuses, he realized that the accommodations near major universities were often of poor quality or failed to align with the cultural and intellectual needs of visitors—such as professors, parents, and academics. This led to the decision to create a concept entirely focused on university districts—like the Philadelphia hotel situated between UPenn and Drexel—combining contemporary design, tailored comfort, and strong artistic influences, such as the paintings by Carlo Trevisan.

In 2016 (exactly 10 years ago) a remarkable and unique artistic project was realized, forging a strong bond between The Study at University City in Philadelphia and Italy. The artist in question is the Venetian painter Carlo Trevisan, and his collaboration with the hotel represents a monumental undertaking in terms of both scale and concept.

The details of the CARLO TREVISAN'S ARTISTIC project

The massive commission: To furnish the property's rooms, Trevisan was commissioned to create no fewer than 216 original oil paintings - one for each of the hotel's guest rooms and suites.

The collaboration: The project was made possible through the mediation and logistical coordination of the Carré d'Artistes art gallery, which oversaw the creation and timely delivery of all the artworks.

Style and atmosphere ("Cloud" and Californian vibes): Inside the rooms, Trevisan’s paintings engage in a dialogue with the hotel’s warm, clean-lined furnishings (such as the iconic tan leather armchair by the window). Many of the works in this series evoke evocative skies, clouds, open spaces, swimming pools, and bright, airy architecture—drawing on a sunny, dreamlike aesthetic that reflects Trevisan’s signature lyrical, minimalist surrealism.

The artist's goal: Trevisan—who at the time was painting in the quiet of his studio in an ancient Tuscan village - intended for these oil canvases to offer guests (often students, academics, lecturers, writers, literary figures, or travelers) a form of "chromatic meditation." They provide a clean, restorative visual space where the mind and gaze can wander freely amidst the silence and peace of pure color. It is a beautiful example of how contemporary Italian art has become an integral part of the visual identity and daily experience of a design hotel in the heart of Philadelphia.
